Training services

We are able to offer a wide range of training services that will allow you to get the most from your Thermal analysis and rheology instrumentation. We have no set agenda for training, preferring instead to construct courses that meet the individual needs of customers. Typical areas that we would be able to cover include the following:

Instrument calibration and performance verification - £200 - £400 per day

Detailed training in all areas of instrument calibration can be provided hands on with theoretical aspects covered. We provide this as a standard feature of Preventative Maintenance Contracts. Accurate calibration of your instrumentation and tracking of performance is critical for generating accurate, reliable data and these skills should be developed in house. Areas covered include:

  • Baseline, weight, heat flow, temperatue, Heat capacity, Expansion calibration

  • Preparation of standards and calibration procedures.

  • Tracking of instrument performance through use of reference materials and standards.

  • Cleaning and gneral maintenance of transducers and accessories.

Sample Preparation, Method Development, Data Analysis & Interpretation - £400 per day

Knowing the capabilities ond options available with your instrumentation is key in maximising the potential for material characterisation. With our in-depth knowledge of instrument capabilities and a broad understanding of material classes and properties, we can offer expert guidance in areas such as sample preparation, method development, data analysis and interpretation. We can provide hands on training in the following areas to help you achieve a high level of understanding in your material assays:

  • Optimising sample preparation to gain maximum sensitivity and resolution in your measurements.

  • Developing appropriate thermal programs for the materials you are investigating. Guidance and support provided on advanced techniques including Modulated Temperature DSC (MT-DSC), Photocalorimetry (PCA) and High Resolution TGA (Hi-Res TGA),

  • In depth training on data analysis and interpretation provided.

  • On-going support by e mail and telephone provided and included in the price of a training program.

  • Mechanical testing: Getting measuring conditions right for testing with Dynamic Mechanical Analysis and Rheology can be a tricky business. We can guide you through all aspects of this to ensure you are generating reliable, accurate data.

Theory and Applications Training - £500 per day

ASM Services can provide theory and applications training in addition to the more practical hands on courses provided. The course material gives a valuable insight into the understanding of Thermal Analysis & Rheology techniques, their capabilities and most importantly the areas of application for which they have become widely used. Ideal for candidates new to these techniques. Theory/application courses are tailored to individual customer requirements. The techniques and application areas covered in these training courses include the following:

Techniques

  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Modulated Temperature DSC

  • Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and High Resolution TGA. Simultaneous TGA-DSC.
  • Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) & Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA)

  • Rheology.

Application areas

  • Elastomers, Thermoplastics, Thermosets.

  • Composites & adhesives

  • Ceramics, alloys.

  • Biomedical materials (Hydrogels, proteins, tissues)

  • Foodstuffs

  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Inorganics

  • Petroleum - Waxes, oils, bitumen, fuels.

  • Natural materials, Plant and animal derived, fibres, natural non-woven composites.
